Our Talavera-inspired collection draws on the iconic pottery style from Puebla, Mexico. Born from a crossroad of Spanish majolica, Moorish geometry, and Indigenous craft, Talavera was the artisan answer to the suddenly popular Ming porcelain arriving in colonial Mexico through the Philippines. Local workshops borrowed Chinese silhouettes like the bulbous tibor jar, and reinterpreted calligraphic brushwork into rhythmic floral bands and a feathered foliage and plumage pattern called plumeado.
We explore this tradition of silhouette patterns with concentric cuts that fan outward from a central spine. The stacked radial layers form an ivy-like pattern like brushstrokes. The surface accordions and fans into dimensional relief, with radiating tines that frame and flex the silhouette.
